About Conil de la Frontera
Conil
de la Frontera has about 16,000 inhabitants. It is surrounded by a very
diverse landscape, with its breath-taking coastline, old Spanish town features,
undeveloped countryside, pine forests and many surrounding traditional villages.
The area is in keeping with the inhabitants' way of life - as they make
their living from farming, fishing, trading, small businesses and also from
tourism.

Natural Beauty and Impressive Architecture
All in all, 16 km of long sandy beaches stretch out nearby, which are suitable for a variety of leisure activities, for the young or old. Some beaches stretch back to dramatic cliffs. They are said to be the most beautiful beaches of all the Spanish coastlines!, Also historic towns are near to hand such as Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz, Jerez and Arcos.Typically Andalucian
Conil
is fast becoming popular with summer tourists, particularly the Spanish themselves.
Because of this it still retains it's typical Andalucian feel with narrow
cobbled streets, real Tapas bars, open-air markets at weekends and pavement
cafes around the main plazas. And you'll love the people. July and August
are particularly popular with the Spanish and the Town becomes busy and lively
with numerous festivals.
Steeped in Spanish History
In the centre of the Conil town there are still many ruins dating back to the Moorish period,
which you have to discover for yourself since they are situated
in the small alleyways and streets.
So a guide book may be a good idea. It
is particularly pleasing to have a look at the highly creative and countless
inner courtyards the Spanish seem to love so much.
Conil's old town presents some historical monuments worth visiting:
- Tower of Guzman el Bueno
- Church of Santa Catalina
- Convento de la Victoria - featuring interesting paintings
- Convento de San Francesco de Paula - see the image of Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes (Our Lady of Virtue) the Patron Saint of the town.
Authentic Spanish Food and Drink
Conil
is also well known for its seafood restaurants, and if you enjoy wonderful
food and wine at very reasonable prices you cannot go far wrong. Conil offers
a rich variety of fresh produce and tasty dishes, followed by a good variety
of desserts. Don't forget to try the rice and cardillo, puchero
(broth), potato salad, wild asparagus, and tagarninas...beef
and pork meat, charcuterie, chackling and game meat.
If you prefer fish, we can recommend you try the excellent cuttlefish, squid, tooth bream, sole, red mullet, sardine. Tuna fish comes salted, in oil or cooked with onions. Try the ortiguillas (deep fried sea anemones), which you can only find in the Cadiz area. Rosquetes and bizcochos and pastries (pestiños, rosquitos and tortas) are the typical desserts of Conil. For a really lovely meal check 'La Fontenella' restaurant, only 4 minutes walk from the apartment, set on the beach. You can watch the sun go down whilst enjoying delicious sea food. Bar Ligero offers reasonably priced Tapas and "Paco" the owner serves very generous measure of Baileys and Cognac... BE WARNED!!
